Share the Road: Pilgrimage to Sturgis Populates Missouri Roads with Bikers

Courtesty Kansas City Master Patrol Officer James Schriever. Email him at james.schriever@kcpd.org.

For the next week, hundreds of thousands of bikers will be on our roads heading to Sturgis South Dakota for the 71st annual Black Hills rally. The Sturgis Rally kicked off this weekend and will last until August 14.

Since I-35 is a major connection to our brothers and sisters in the south, and I-70 a major connection from the east, our city will see a large amount of those riders passing through.

During this time, as well as at all times, motorist are encouraged to pay extra attention when changing lanes as well as when making left turns.

The failure of motorists to detect and recognize motorcycles in traffic is the predominating cause of motorcycle accidents.

Please look for our two-wheeled brothers and sisters before making left turns and look twice before changing lanes.

Public Sees Final Independence Bus Route Proposal

In any given week, Vince Davis will ride every bus line in Independence.  He said while the current system has its kinks, the newest proposal would be a serious headache for him.

"I like it the way it is because I've learned to deal with it," said Davis.  "If they make the orange route a flex route, life will suddenly become unbearable."

The proposal he's referring to was presented by Independence Community Development Director Jennifer Clark Thursday afternoon.  It was the final public meeting for input before the Transit Committee takes the draft to the City Council for approval.

Are Kansas Women Combating Higher Gas Prices with Scooters?

Are Kansas Women Combating Higher Gas Prices with Scooters?

Press Release

As gas prices challenge historic highs, the Motorcycle Industry Council announced recently that sales for motor scooters jumped almost 50 percent (49.6) for the first three months of 2011.

Allstate Insurance internal data suggests female riders may be leading the trend. Almost three times more women requested quotes for scooter insurance in 2010 versus men.

With the lines blurring between motorcycles and scooters based on engine size – some “maxi” scooters are equipped with up to 800cc engines – the primary difference between motorcycles and scooters is the “step-through” frame of the scooter.

Common Sense Ways to Save You Money at the Pump

Common Sense Ways to Save You Money at the Pump

Some recent news suggests that the national average for gasoline will fall by 50 cents come summer.

Yeah, right.

Just this week, oil companies reported a $125 billion profit, which most likely will go to continued drilling costs, advertising and innovation – without any cost savings passed to the consumer. You and me. The people who drive to work and the store and go on vacations, when we can afford it.

Until then, there are some pretty good tips (some from me and some from Angie of Angie’s List, who personally sent me this information) on how to stem the flow of bleeding from the gas tank. Read more...

I wanted to bring attention to a staggering statistic in Kansas City that does not get the attention it deserves. Over the weekend Kansas City recorded its 24th, 25th and 26th loss of life due to vehicular accidents.

At this time last year Kansas City only recorded 20. Many of these lives we have lost could have been avoided by the use of a seat belt.

Starting May 23 and running until June 6,  law enforcement agencies across Kansas and Missouri will be aggressively enforcing seat belt usage with the Click it or Ticket Campaign.

Capt. Kruger of the Kansas Highway Patrol said it best: “You can hate me all you want for giving you a seat belt ticket, but seat belts save lives.”

This is the best “radar detector” a community can have is when an officer tells you it’s going to happen. No excuses. Wear it!

Bus Services Miss Cuts For Now

Bus Services Miss Cuts For Now

Despite tough personnel cuts in the city’s proposed 2011-12 budget, no changes will take place in existing bus service in Independence.

However, in anticipation of possible significant cost increases for Kansas City Area Transportation Authority routes in 2012-13, City Manager Robert Heacock has recommended the City Council form a committee to study the issue. Read more...
