United Nations Declares Hunger Crisis in East Africa, Celebrities Take Action

United Nations Declares Hunger Crisis in East Africa, Celebrities Take Action

The United Nations has declared a hunger crisis in parts of Somalia and is calling for a widespread international response to end the suffering. Right now 12 million people in East Africa are at risk of starving to death.

Preventable diseases and malnutrition have already claimed the lives of 30,000 children in the last three months. Their graves are but shallow holes dug among wind-blown trash.

Thousands of Somalis are fleeing their native land each week, walking for days under the hot, African sun in search of food, water and shelter at refugee camps. Some are walking as far as Kenya and Ethiopia.

It's a humanitarian crisis that has snagged the attention of some celebrities. Bruno Mars, Eminem, Rihanna, Britney Spears and Lady Gaga have all signed up to fundraise for the Save the Children of East Africa charity.
