MoDOT: Thieves stole pedestrian signals at I-70 and Paseo

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Thieves stole 11 pedestrian signal poles, bases and heads along Interstate 70 at The Paseo Monday, causing about $30,000 in damage, the Missouri Department of Transportation said.

“Stealing and damaging pedestrian signals at interstate crossings can compromise safety for people who rely on these devices to help them navigate busy intersections on foot,” said Assistant District Engineer Chris Redline.

“The only people authorized to access these signals are MoDOT employees or our contractors.  We encourage the public to call 9-1-1 immediately if someone spots what they believe to be suspicious activity alongside our highway system.”

Until the new signals are installed, pedestrians should proceed with caution, crossing the street in the same direction as the flow of motorized traffic. Motorists should be also be vigilant and watch out for pedestrians in the area.

Disney vows action after report of wealthy hiring disabled to skip lines

(CNN) — Disney World is looking into reports that some wealthy visitors are hiring disabled people to pretend to be family members so that they can skip lines.

“It is unacceptable to abuse accommodations that were designed for guests with disabilities,” spokesman Bryan Malenius told CNN Wednesday. “We are thoroughly reviewing the situation and will take appropriate steps to deter this type of activity.”

Reports of the alleged practice sparked fury on social media, with some people calling the actions “crazy,” “awful,” and “despicable.”

But others defended the idea, arguing it’s a way to help some disabled people make good money.

The debate began with an article in the New York Post.

Home appraisals no longer derailing sales

By Les Christie

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — Consider this one more sign that the housing market is heating up: Appraisers are putting higher values on homes again, allowing for more deals to go through.

During the housing bust, sales were often derailed by low-ball appraisals that fell far shy of a home’s selling price.

For example, if a home cost $500,000 and required a 20% down payment of $100,000, the buyer would need to finance $400,000. But if the appraiser valued the home at $450,000, the buyer would only be eligible for a $360,000 loan — making the home too costly for some buyers.

But now, as home prices climb and housing inventories shrink, appraisers are valuing homes at or above their selling prices, according to Lawrence Yun, chief economist for the National Association of Realtors.
